Panama prepares to witness the partial solar eclipse on April 8

News from Panama / Friday, April 5th, 2024

Next Monday, April 8, the eyes of the Panamanians will go to the sky to observe a fascinating celestial phenomenon: a partial solar eclipse. According to NASA, this impressive event will be visible throughout the country, starting at 12:55 p.m. and reaching its peak at 1:31 p.m., and then ending its visibility at 2:08 p.m.

Although the degree of darkening of the sun will vary depending on the location, in regions such as Bocas del Toro and Chiriquí that will have a darkening of 9% and 7% respectively, it is expected that most areas will experience a darkening between 4% and 5%.

Although it will not be seen in its entirety, this partial solar eclipse offers an exciting opportunity to enjoy an astronomical phenomenon. Spectators are urged to take precautions and use appropriate protection, such as certified sunglasses, when looking directly at the sun. In addition, for those who use telescopes, it is crucial to use appropriate filters to protect their eyes.

Rodney Delgado, an expert in Space Sciences at the Technological University of Panama (UTP), highlights the importance of this event, noting that, although it will not be seen in its entirety from Panama, it is still a significant moment for astronomical observers.
