News from Panama / Friday, May 5th, 2023

For two days, representatives of the Government of Panama, the European Union and other strategic partners in the region will participate in the “EU-Panama Dialogue”: Financing the energy transition to explore forms of collaboration that facilitate the country’s transition to a carbon-free economy and contribute to meeting Panama’s climate change efforts.

The event, which will be an opportunity for the Global Gateway Alliance, will be held in Panama City between May 11 and 12, the Ministry of the Environment (MIAmbiente) announced. The Panamanian representation will be headed by Milciades Concepción, Minister of Environment of Panama, the National Secretary of Energy, Jorge Rivera Staff. For its part, the European delegation will be headed by Felice Zaccheo, Head of the Unit for Central America and the Caribbean of the Directorate General of International Associations of the European Commission (INTPA).

It was announced that the event will also be attended by high-level personalities relevant to the implementation of the Panamanian Energy Transition Agenda, from both the public and private sectors of Panama, Latin America and Europe.

In 2020, Panama formulated and approved its 2020-2030 Energy Transition Agenda. The Agenda is linked to the achievement of the National Level Determined Contribution (NDC) of Panama.

The NDCs are the framework plans that countries present to the United Nations to meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement, the international treaty to counteract the effects of climate change and prevent the temperature of the planet from continuing to rise.

The Global Gateway Strategy was launched by the European Union in 2021. It is a model of the way in which Europe can build more resilient connections with the rest of the world. It supports smart investments in quality infrastructures in the digital, energy and transport sectors, as well as health, education and research systems. All this, in compliance with the strictest social and environmental standards, and in accordance with the values and standards of the EU.
