We are privileged to be at the juncture of another explosive growth spurt for business and foreign direct investment. Now we need to focus on on improving our position as the logistics center for the world.

Logistics Services represents over 25% of Panama´s GDP and in order to take advantage of the connectivity offered by the Canal and its strategic location, the rules for logistics and port industries must be improved and modernized.

The infrastructure and technology is in place, but a better legal framework is needed in order to take advantage of the connectivity and advantages of the Canal and the location of Panama in the Latin American region.

In the view of Alberto Aleman Zubieta, former administrator of the Panama Canal Authority (ACP by its initials in Spanish), “… ‘in order to overcome this challenge, imminent work is needed on the creation of a General Law on Ports, so that the world can understand Panama’s value, and its geographical position. We must establish strategies to develop our geographical position to its full capacity and give added value to the cargo passing through the Canal’.”

Capital.com.pa reports that the administrator of the Panama Canal Authority, Jorge Luis Quijano, believes that  “… among the changes to be made is improving established regulations, adapting the education system to respond to the needs which will arise in the medium and long term.”
