Figures on Crops in Central America

In 2016 the main regional crop sold abroad was coffee, with $2.934 billion in exported value, equivalent to 887 thousand tons.

The main destinations of coffee exports are the USA, Germany, Belgium, Italy and France, which together account for 70% of the volume exported by the region, equivalent to approximately $1.9 billion. In the case of exporters, five companies sell about 15% of the total volume abroad, which is equivalent to $440 million.

After coffeebananas are the next most important export product, by value, as last year Central America sold $2.226 billion abroad, equivalent to 5.2 million tons. In 2016 the average price per kilo of exported bananas ranged from $0.41 to $0.47.

According to sales abroad, sugar was the third most important crop in 2016 for the region. Last year Central American countries exported a total of 3.4 million tons, equivalent to $1.243 billion. The main export destinations for sugar are the US, Canada, the Ivory Coast, Taiwan, Indonesia and Ghana, which together account for half of the volume sold by the region, equivalent to $610 million.
