  1. Hello Tom, and thank you for the well written op-ed about having a “Plan-B”. To be honest, it was refreshing to hear you speak positively about Panama. I have come to love Panama, however since the recent scare of COVID and the subsequent overwhelming governmental controls set in place, I have been looking elsewhere to retire.

The last thing I want to do is to leave the United States which has been largely based on its beliefs of freedom for mankind only to relocate to another country bent on Draconian measures to insure “safety” to its inhabitants. Quite frankly, the world has been duped into believing governments can control viruses. Therefore, our livelihood and free will has been surrendered in exchange for the false hope of survival. Unfortunately, most countries have decided to “follow suit”, so Panama is not really all that much different than the U.S. in this respect.

Having spent my entire life in Medicine, I was able to stand on the outside watching as people panicked in fear from the thought of “getting the deadly virus”; as it had been touted. Naturally, they will do as they are told from those in charge. However, as an educated and experienced clinician, I understand the pathogenesis of disease and know that aside from maintaining a decent level of personal hygiene and good personal health practices, that one cannot hide from the virus anymore than we can avoid the occasional insult of someone’s loud music. The problem is not out there; rather it is your physical and mental well being that protects you from disease.

Nevertheless, from the standpoint that Panama affords a quality life in most respects, I concur. I pray that someday those who are in charge and capable of impacting our lives will learn the truth and allow us, the people, to have free will to live fully. Breathing is not a crime. We all carry germs and yet we somehow survive. As long as one does not willfully act in such a way to harm another people, our governments should allow us to live in harmony as we were meant to.

Viruses will come and go and people will die every year from a variety of causes. We cannot control this completely either. This is what was expressed in the playful movie, The Lion King, as Elton John sang The Circle of Life. We can take precautions but, please, not at the expense of life itself.

So, in closing, I hope this fear of germs passes with understanding that these viruses, bacteria and fungi have around longer than mankind. If they were truly the enemy, none of us would be here to talk about it.

So, instead of “Be Safe”, I will say… Live, Love and Enjoy!

  2. Seriously? Marxists and Bolsheviks? As opposed to what, the Fascist toxic waste dump of a human being now occupying the White House? And you are encouraging more of his stupid supporters to move here? We have quite enough of them already.

  3. Everything on this promotional message is fine except the allusion to Marxists and Boscheviks in the the third paragraph. Sounds like something a member of the far right would say. Please refrain from political messages. I like your newsletter. Please keep it accurate as always, not alarmist.

  4. I enjoy reading Panama Perspective. But this article on Plan B, does not reflect the content and substance of your previous newsletters. Do you want potential residents to live in Panama based on FEAR? I believe that is a recipe for disaster in beautiful Boquete and Panama at large.
Consider the power of your words.??????
