  1. What these studies are advocating is what the US has been doing for the last 20-30 years, which is factory farming. These are creating rivers and lakes that are dead due to enormous amounts of animal waste. Land and people are being poisoned due to the adding of arsenic to chicken feed (promotes growth). Plus the constant feeding of antibiotics to farm animals is leading to a loss of effectiveness of antibiotics for human use and the concentration of chickens in filthy spaces is setting the stage for epidemics of avian flu viruses. Factory farming is absolutely unsustainable for the US and while the output of factory farms may be high quantity, the quality of the food is abysmal.     What is needed is a return of the small family farm but at a decent profitability through the use of modern permaculture techniques.
