The contest which could be held in August or September will be seeking only two operators, and will exclude certain brands and products which will be awarded separately.

The tender is for the duty free spaces in Terminal 1, which since 2007 had been operated by Waked International S.A., whose concession expires in December 2017. As explained by the authorities of Tocumen SA, the inclusion of Waked companies in the Clinton List forced them to make changes to airport plans.

Prensa.com explains that   “…Fidanque III said the board of the airport does not have elements to remove the concession from Wisa after it was included on the Clinton List but warns that if the company violates its contract by not paying royalties to Tocumen, then a decision would have to be made.”

“… Fidanque III explained that the new tender will seek to two operators, but they will exclude some brands and products in order to award them separately. Unlike the 2007 tender, Tocumen will increase the percentage of monthly royalties to be paid by new operators, and decrease payment for keyholder rights.  ‘We do not want to raise a lot of capital as we want to avoid a repeat of what happened 9 years ago when the funds obtained from the tender of duty free spaces were used in projects outside of the airport’. “

The tender for the commercial space in Terminal 2 is scheduled for early 2017.
