Telecoms: Business Upwards in Panama

News from Panama / Monday, November 16th, 2020

Between 2018 and 2020, it is estimated that the demand for data services in the fixed and mobile network grew 2.5 times, a rise that can be partly explained by the need to work at a distance and receive educational services online.

Because of the spread of covid-19 and the imposition of restrictions on mobility, businesses, workers and consumers have had to migrate to the digital environment at great speed.

The digitalization plans that companies were planning to implement within 1 to 3 years, in this context of new business reality, had to be implemented in a few weeks.

The changes in habits and the need to migrate to digital formats, became a market opportunity and a challenge for telecoms companies operating in Panama.

Rodrigo Diehl, CEO and general manager of Tigo Panama, told Martesfinanciero.com that “… the telecom traffic in the fixed network in Panama increased 2.5 times more this year compared to 2018, when the group arrived in the country. In the case of the mobile network, he refers that there was also an increase of 2.5 times more than what was consumed in 2018.

Diehl added that the increase in demand has been met “… because a new network was built, in which $30 million was invested this year to support this great demand, this means that Panamanians are consuming 2.5 times more traffic on their cell phones than they did just two years ago. This translates into more videos, more virtual education, and more communications.
