A planned call between the President of the United States, Donald Trump, and his Panamanian counterpart, José Raúl Mulino, was postponed this Friday due to changes in Trump’s agenda, according to a statement from the Presidency of Panama.
The statement, published in X this Friday, said that White House officials had contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Panama to postpone the call “due to last-minute changes in the US president’s agenda.”
“The New New Bust will inform details about the new date once it is coordinated between the two countries,” the statement added.
The call was scheduled for days after the U.S. State Department said U.S. government ships could transit through the Panama Canal without paying fees. The statement provoked a strong denial from Mulino, who described it as an “intolerable” falsehood.
But on Thursday, the Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, reversed the State Department’s statement on Thursday, saying that the United States “expes” that Panama will eliminate tariffs although he recognized that “Panama has a process of laws and procedures that must be followed with regard to the Panamanian port.”
