Another fall out for Odebrecht is the Chang II hydro project which will be as huge as Chang I. After rescinding Odebrecht’s concession to build the Bocas del Toro hydroelectric station, the government has announced that it will reformulate the project for a new tender procedure.

The aim of the Varela administration is to revisit the characteristics of the original project, which consisted of a concession to design, build and operate the hydroelectric plant in Bocas del Toro, formerly known as Chan II.

Victor Urrutia, National Secretary of Energy, told Prensa.com that now the project would be reformulated “…” and they are calling a new tender. The aim is to find a company with the same interests and not for anyone to invent extra costs and over charge us’, said Urrutia.”

“… ‘Although it will cause a delay, a design must be made according to what we want as a country in terms of the company that will build the project,” said Urrutia, who heads the organization that dictates energy policies. One point that is worrisome is the economic contribution of the state to do the work’.”
