Panama Negotiates Removing Work Visa Requirement for Mexicans

The two countries are negotiating rules which would allow any Mexican who is hired by a company established in Panama to have access to permanent residence.

Vanessa Rubio, undersecretary for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Mexican Foreign Ministry, told Critica.com.pa that “… both countries are in the process of exchange of consular information … will the new government of Panama in charge of announcing the entry into force in the coming months. ”

The new government of Panama will now assume “… negotiations with Mexico to grant a subcategory of permanent resident to its nationals, which anyone with a job offer in the Central American country would have access to, without the requirement for a work visa.”

According to the Foreign Ministry of Panama, “… there are more than a dozen Mexican companies operating in Panama, among them Cemex and Bimbo, employing some 60 nationals, who in many cases are settled with their families. The measure, explained by Eduardo Bueno, a specialist at the University of the Americas, represents an opportunity for Mexicans to take advantage of the economic boom enjoyed by the isthmus nation, which had growth of 8.4 percent in 2013. ”
