According to 2023 Homicide Statistics, the highest homicide rate among 20 Latin American and Caribbean countries surveyed was in Jamaica with 60.9 murders committed per 100,000 inhabitants. Ecuador came in second, with a homicide rate of 44.5. Jamaica and Ecuador climbing the ladder have surpassed Venezuela, Haiti and Honduras. In the same year, the lowest rate was recorded in El Salvador, with a homicide rate of 2.4 per 100,000 inhabitants, which in previous years El Salvador had one of the highest homicide rates in Latin America. Panama achieved a significantly lower homicide rate than Costa Rica in 2023, according to statistics.
