Panama and Argentina strengthen agricultural cooperation ties

Representatives of both countries discussed the possibility of identifying issues for technological development applied to agriculture and livestock, agricultural cooperation agreements, among other issues

The Minister in charge of Agricultural Development of Panama, Alexis Pineda, met with the ambassador of Argentina to Panama, Sandra Rosana Pitta, with the interest of generating a scheme of cooperation in agricultural matters between the two countries.

At the meeting they talked about the possibility of identifying issues for technological development applied to agriculture and livestock, since this southern country has a lot of progress in genetic development, the Ministry of Agricultural Development reported in a statement.

In addition, there was talk of establishing agricultural cooperation agreements between the two countries, identifying various activities and projects that can be undertaken through a mixed alliance.

The meeting also discussed the possibility of establishing the sending of young students from agricultural careers to reinforce knowledge in Argentina. During the meeting, Pitta was accompanied by the commercial advisor Leopoldo Garade and Pablo Villalobos, of the Office of International Technical Cooperation (Ocoti), also participated.

According to data from the Office of Commercial Intelligence (Intelcom), of the Ministry of Commerce and Industries (Mici), updated in October 2023, the Republic of Panama has maintained diplomatic links with the Argentine Republic since November 5, 1920.

His more than 102 years of relationships have developed in a climate of friendship and cooperation, derived from bilateral legal instruments. Among these mechanisms are some related to the agricultural sector, such as cooperation and coordination in the field of health and plant quarantine between the Republic of Panama and Argentina, signed in Panama on May 10, 1996 and in force since June 22, 1998.

As well as the agreement between the two countries for the promotion and reciprocal protection of investments, signed in Panama on May 10, 1996 and in force since June 22, 1998 (here are also in force the agreement interpretative of the agreement, since September 15, 2004, and the agreement interpretative of article 5, since October 19, 2004), to mention some agreements between the two countries.

Commercial balance

Argentina occupied the 26th position in 2022, as the destination of Panamanian exports. It was at number 23, that same year, as the main country of origin of imports into Panama.

According to Intelcom’s figures, the total trade balance of Panama and Argentina shows a recurring trade deficit for our country for 18 years, sustained throughout the period 2005-2022. In addition, Panama did not export to Argentina, within the framework of the Latin American Integration Association (Aladi). As for the agricultural trade balance, it had a deficit for Panama in 18 years, within the period indicated in advance. The deficit exceeded $61 million.
