Panama: Dip in Beef Consumption

News from Panama / Monday, August 20th, 2018

The farmers’ association reports that the annual per capita consumption of boneless beef has fallen from 13.6 kilos to 13.3 kilos.

The National Association of Cattle Ranchers (Anagan) states that the reduction, although slight, is due to a fall in local production and an increase in imports, which may have generated an imbalance in the local market.

Euclides Díaz, Anagan’s executive secretary, explained to Prensa.com that ““Although production of beef from heifers has increased, that of mature cows has declined, which has kept the internal yield at the same level.

Another factor that has an effect is imports. The entry of frozen meat into the country has caused a drop in the purchase price of live cattle. Last year the price paid was $2.2 per kilo, but now they pay $2, without this reduction being reflected in the consumer price,” said the farmer.”
