Here is something we could really use here in Panama, a rail line from Panama City to David.
Studies are being carried out on the viability of a Japanese loan to finance a railway connecting the western zone with the Panamanian capital. From a press release issued by the Presidency of Panama:
The President of the Republic, Ricardo Martinelli received, on the morning of May 2, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Fumio Kishida, who desribed the progress that Panama has made in terms of the economy and the Canal expansion, a very important issue for Japan which is already one of the 4 most frequent users of the waterway.
Martinelli said: “The feasibility of a low interest loan from Japan for the construction of a railway to connect the western sector with the Panamanian capital is under study.”
“We have commenced discussions relevant to having a direct flight between Panama and Tokyo, from Tocumen airport, and explained all the advantages that Japanese entrepreneurs will have in establishing their businesses in our territory,” he added.

A rail would add a lot of economic value to the David and the Chiriqui area from a cargo point of view as a lot of agriculture products are produced in the western zone of panama that are used in the city or shipped out through the ports at the canal and rail would significantly reduce the land shipping costs of goods from the western part of Panama, increasing Panama ability to export goods competitively and increase money coming into Panama. Hopefully this happens, as it would be one more long-term boom for the economies of Panama. More good stuff for Panama’s economy
