Traditional Panama meals have influences from Spain, Africa and the indigenous Native American population. Most of the dishes there have similarities with foods of other countries that were also in “Gran Colombia,” like Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador.

To get a feel of real Panamanian flavors, you should try these dishes.

Arroz con pollo

This is must try rice recipe made with chicken and vegetables and it is an authentic Panamanian staple.

Ceviche

Caribbean countries have a way with seafood and any seafood lover would enjoy ceviche. There are many variations of this meal and make sure to try the delightful zesty ceviche when in Panama.

This beloved Panamanian soup is made with chicken and a variety of vegetables in a lovely broth packed with flavor. Many families and restaurants have their own twist to this traditional soup.

Patacones

In Panama, patacones are the alternative to fries or chips. This street food is made with mashed and fried plantains.

Tacos

Almost everyone loves tacos and this Panamanian version is one you must try when in Panama. There are different varieties, from vegetarian to the traditional one everyone is familiar with, to fish tacos.

Panama’s local markets sell fresh fish caught daily. Whether you want it grilled, fried or baked, Panama has some very delicious fish. You can visit any restaurant and have their catch of the day or buy from the market and make your own fish meal paired with any side of your choice.
