The company which produces and sells genetically modified seed has presented the Panamanian government with a formal request to market their products in the country.
Following the strategy implemented in other countries, Monsanto seeks to prove the absence of adverse effects of GMOs on human and animal consumption, as outlined in a study by the University of California-Davis .
In order for the Panamanian government to approve Monsanto’s entry into the country they have to “… revive an interagency committee on biosafety and open a specialized laboratory.” According to reports from the Ministry of Health the use of seeds or products containing GM ingredients in the country has not yet been approved.
Prensa.com reported that “…In a letter to Health Minister Camilo Alleyne, Monsanto explained the benefits of their products; Roundon Rinding corn and soybeans, for human and animal consumption. ”
… Besides the letter, executives from Monsanto, based in St. Louis, Missouri, sent a portfolio of information to the minister pointing to the safety of their GM products. “
I would like to write to the Ministry of Health about my concerns about allowing Monsanto into Panama. While many countries are banning GM products, because they are not proven safe, why would Panama go ahead and allow them? I don’t believe in any GM products, including the mosquitoes, the Frankenfish that are being developed near Boquete or any other manipulation of organisms that isn’t ‘natural.
The citizens of Panama should do everything they can to prevent Monsanto from selling GMO (genetically modified organisms) seeds in the country. Monsanto does not have the people of Panama best interest in mind, their only interest is to control the world’s food supply. GMO produced foods are being fought by citizens in counties all around the world; Italy, Austria, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Portugal, Greece, Spain, UK and others (see http://www.organicconsumers.org). Panama MUST keep Monsanto out of the country. The U.S. is one of the few countries stupid enough to allow Monsanto and their products to be used on crops. Monsanto and their GMO crops are poisoning citizens in the U.S. Monsanto is trying to control the availability of food around the world by selling their seeds to farmers but the farmers have to buy new seeds each growing season. Research Monsanto farming. You won’t want to eat their food. Say NO to Monsanto.

The Panama govt should look at glyphosate residues in soya etc.
GM products of the Monsanto type are not safe, not because they are GM, but because the food is sprayed with Monsanto glyphosate,a systemic weeks killer.. The glyphosate remains in the crops and can do untold damage to human and animal digestive systems, especially in the colon. The GM crops are designed to be resistant to glyphosate, but not to eliminate the weedkiller from the crop. It cannot be washed off, nor removed in any other way. Be afraid because govts. get most things wrong most of the time.

We have been eating genetically modified food for over 50 years and there aren’t any credible stats that prove it is unsafe. The real facts show that without it, many millions of people in the developing world would starve.
