The French-flagged boat Plastic Odyseey that promotes the reduction of plastic waste in the oceans will be in Panama from October 30 to November 8 of this year, where it will offer talks and visits to raise awareness of the need to avoid the contamination of the seas with this type of waste.

This stop in Panama is the 14th of a 30-stop tour for three weeks on three continents as part of an expedition that travels the planet in search of solutions to build a world without plastic.

The Plastic Odyseey project, acts on land in the most affected areas to reduce plastic pollution at sea and from October 1, 2022 and for the next three years, the team of Plastic Odyssey explorers will travel the world to discover, reference and share practical solutions to the plastic waste crisis.

The last of the boat’s stops took place in the city of Cartagena, in Colombia, where the ship was visited by school students and professionals who work in favor of the reduction of the oceans due to this kind of waste.

According to Plastic Odyseey, 90% of plastic pollution in the oceans comes from between 20 and 30 countries in Asia, Africa and South America, where there are no industrial waste management systems, and according to data from the World Bank, Panama generates 191,580 tons of plastic waste each year and is the second largest producer of waste in Latin America.

Morgane Kerdoncuff, head of Scales of this initiative, indicated that in these countries, many entrepreneurs are developing or want to develop recycling initiatives to turn plastic waste into a lever for economic development and the fight against pollution.

“These initiatives are led by self-taught entrepreneurs, isolated and with limited resources in an informal economy. Our Recycling Academy program is part of the “Cleaning the Past” strategy of the project that aims to train local entrepreneurs in the fundamentals of plastic waste recycling,” said Kerdoncuff.
