Construction of Schools: A Multi Million Dollar Business

From 2015 to date, $393 million worth of contracts have been awarded in Panama for various renovations and constructions of public schools.
Data from the CentralAmericaData’s information system on “Public Procurement in Central America”  shows that from 2015 to date the Ministry of Education in Panama launched 1,063 tenders, of which 450 have been awarded and another 613 are pending adjudication or were closed without the contract having been awarded.
Main construction companies
In the period in question Constructora Meco, Calypso Investment Corp, Arroyo y Asociados, Constructora Rigasevices, Construcciones Civiles Generales and Inversionistas de Construcción obtained contracts worth $156 million, equivalent to 40% of the total awarded.
Awards per year
In 2015 the Panamanian government awarded contracts for construction works in educational establishments for $134 million, in 2016 the value of contracts awarded increased to $192 million, and so far in 2017 only $67 million has been awarded.
Contracts pending award
In addition to the 450 contracts awarded for $393 million since 2015 to date, there are another 613 un-awarded contracts, totaling nearly $751 million, some of which were contested or declared void, and others are pending the holding of their respective tender act.
