This could be as disastrous as the Chinese built Canal proposed for Nicaragua on the environment. I do hope that it fails.
Shanghai Haojun Investment & Management is interested in participating in the project to build a road between Puerto Armuelles and a complementary port on the Atlantic coast.
The Chinese company Shanghai Haojun Investment & Management Co. Ltd. has expressed interest in taking part in the project which currently has a funding agreement for a technical study for the development of an intermodal canal, a multipurpose port and modernization of the infrastructure at the port in Armuelles.
Laestrella.com.pa reports that “… A business mission, headed by the president of the company, Wang Zhen, demonstrated a firm resolve and desire to be participants in the project, which will involve construction of an intermodal dry canal between Puerto Armuelles, in the Pacific, and complementary port on the Atlantic; and the creation of a long-term business model for this region. ”
“… The CAF is funding a $100,000 study to determine a business model in Waterford, in the province of Chiriqui. ” In response to this, Susana Pinilla CAF, said “… The funding is for a viable business model to convert the area of ??Charco Azul into a world class port that allows the accommodation of large-tonnage ships not only for cruises for tourists, but for the export of products from Chirico . “
I do not really see this as disastrous. I can see this as positive in every way if managed correctly. Which is a key. Unfortunately Panama politicians will probably be involved to no useful propose. But if managed it will lead to a cleaner better and more economically viable Panama.
I hope the project does go through as it will create great opportunities for many people who need them. Plus the new tax revenues generated for many many years to come will help fund social programs and infrastructure. That is progress. Blocking the responsible development of projects that create jobs and tax revenues is the opposite of progress.
