Celsia and Chevron of Panama join force to build a solar plant in Bahía Las Minas, Colón

News from Panama / Friday, March 8th, 2024

In an effort to promote sustainability and the reduction of carbon emissions, Celsia and Chevron of Panama have announced an agreement for the installation and operation of a solar plant at the fuel terminal located in Bahía Las Minas, Colón.

With an installed capacity of 4.03 MWp, this solar plant will allow Chevron to cover 100% of its energy needs in the terminal through renewable sources. Javier Gutiérrez, Leader of Celsia Central America, highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainable development and the transition to a cleaner energy matrix in Panama.

The installation of this solar farm will not only significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions, but will also have a positive environmental impact equivalent to the planting of more than 100,000 mature trees, by ceasing to emit 1809.3 tons of CO2 per year. With 6,714 solar panels distributed over 4 hectares, this project highlights the crucial role of renewable energies in the fight against climate change.

Doriana Hun, General Manager of Chevron of Panama, stressed the alignment of the project with the company’s global carbon footprint reduction objectives. It is expected that by the 4th Q24 of 2024 or the 1Q of 2025, when the solar panels are fully operational, Chevron’s operations in the terminal will be completely carbon neutral, marking a significant milestone in the Panamanian energy industry.

This joint project between Celsia and Chevron reflects the shared commitment of both companies to contribute to Panama’s continued carbon-negative country and sets an important precedent in the adoption of clean energy in the country’s industrial sector.
