  1. At the end of the day, that little smart-ass Frenchman was the hero: Phillipe Bunua-Varilla

    He spoke English, Spanish, and French, and wrote most of the legal treaties etc required during the “creation” of Panama. I believe that there would not be a Panama Canal as we know it if not for Phillipe Bunua-Varilla.

    And it was a French engineer (who was ignored) who actually had the initial idea to dam up the Chagres and create a lake across the Continental Divide.

    There is another more recent book about the Canal authored by Matthew Parker called “Panama Fever”. Another excellent read.
