  1. The whole panama canal in my opinion turned out in the best possible way, the Americans kept it working for all of the 20th century. anybody could use the canal as long as they paid fees. There were no interruptions in service, if panama had acquired during the 20th century is very likely that there would have been interruptions due to political turmoil in panama, we will never know for sure. on the other hand as the 21st century approached the canal lost military importance, the Americans were not investing in it and it was an unnecessary point of contention between the US and Latin america, which was used against the US in the Cold War. The treaties were perfect, the canal remains under the protection of the US and it was transferred to Panama, which now as a mature democracy has invested in the canal to modernize it and enlarge it. Despite all the dire warnings from Reagan and everybody else, things turned out for the best. To Reagan´s credit once the treaties became law his government abode by it as serious governments do.
