What a great idea having Rudy Giuliani speak about how he changed New York’s image from being crime ridden to secure. While Panama is not an unsafe place, it does have it’s weaknesses and Panamanians are very concerned about security. He should be very well received here at the conference. Another bit of good coverage by Don Winner.
The former mayor of New York, Rudolph Giuliani, will visit Panama City in mid May to deliver the keynote address “Building a secure society”, at the opening of the International Security Exhibition which will be held at the ATLAPA convention center.
Rudolph Giuliani was hired by the Panamanian company Heavencorp, organizer of the International Security Fair, projected to be the most important security exhibition in Central America and the Caribbean, bringing together leading manufacturers, distributors, suppliers and end users of equipment, and physical security solutions, electronic, computer, banking and road, plus the disaster emergency response, industrial safety, occupational health and environmental care.
The Safety Fair will begin on May 14 with the keynote address by Rudolph Giuliani in the Anayansi Theatre as well as a gala dinner in honor of the former mayor of New York.
Rudolph Giuliani became a global figure for his leadership in rebuilding New York after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, his main achievement as mayor was the reduction of crime in this city. In his eight years in office (1994 – 2001), Giuliani changed the face of New York, which was considered top be one of the most dangerous cities in the world, and it is now the safest in the United States, according to the FBI, said the President of Heavencorp, Jean Marcel Chery. At the end of the Giuliani administration, overall crime in New York was reduced by 65% ??and homicides by 70%.
Giuliani applied the fundamental points of the “broken window theory” to solve security problems in New York. In simple terms, this theory states that if a criminal breaks the window of a car or house in a neighborhood, and if the next day it has not been fixed or if there is now consequence, then a few days later there will be more broken windows and after a few weeks there will more crimes, vandalism and urban disorder. During his administration, Giuliani stood firm in its position of “zero tolerance” for crime and this led to unprecedented results in terms of reduced crime, Chery said.
In Panama, security is the second most important issue for the public, according to opinion polls conducted by Unimer, Dichter & Neira, Cid Gallup and Ipsos, and Panama is in a region that has the highest crime rates in the world. In this scenario, we believe that Giuliani has a lot to offer us, and we have much to learn from a mayor who was effective, as few others have been, in the fight against crime, Chery said. (Estrella)
