Here is an example where Panama has taken up the challenge of exporting one of it’s prized products to other countries.  There are a number of places and land available to grow this sector.  Another is palm oil.  We have thousands of acres that we have visited with this in mind and it can be purchased for under 5 cents per square foot or around $2,000 per acre.

The main Canadian fresh fruit processor has found good opportunities for expanding its network of suppliers of pineapple with producers from Chiriqui and La Chorrera.

With advice and planning from CentralAmericaData.com’s Business Network, a trade mission composed of the chief executives from the company with plants in Vancouver, Toronto and Los Angeles, visited the principal pineapple producing establishments in Panama, with the aim of increasing its number of suppliers, which are now exclusively from Costa Rica.

The company receives about 900 containers of pineapple a year which it processes in different cuts and sells fresh in the market, and to do this they need a product which is uniform in color and internally flawless.

According to an article in Prensa.com, “The project manager of the Tropical Fruit Company in the village of Cochea, Roger Flores, said that these are parameters that can be met and therefore they can expand the business. He added that the Canadian executives have formed a very good impression of the product after performing some cutting tests and examining the sugar percentage. There is an opportunity to export the Chiriqui pineapple to this market . Currently it is exported to Europe. ”

“The regional director of Mida, Berísimo Martinez said this is another window of opportunity for pineapple producers to sell their product, especially the types of fruit that do not meet other export market requirements but are of excellent quality for fresh consumption. ”
