Thermal Energy to be Tendered in Panama

News from Panama / Monday, August 4th, 2014

The last tender was pulled and now we are back out for a second try.  This needs to be done and soon.

To alleviate a projected shortfall of 300 MW, thermal power plants will be contracted for 2015 and more electricity will be purchased from other Central American countries.

The National Secretariat of Energy of Panama presented a “… Comprehensive Short Term and Medium Term Plan, where the priority action areas are transmission and generation of electricity. ”

“… Demand in the country is growing at rates of between 4.8% to 7.4% annually, a moderate scenario for the next 15 years, so the country needs to significantly increase its capacity to generate electricity.”

An article on Nacion.com reports that “… In the coming weeks a tender will be launched for the generation of 200 MW, from thermal plants, which would allow us to cope with the situation ahead. ”
