Glorious, Unforgettable, Sublime Raspao
First thing first is…you need to know about this Panamanian Shaved Ice delight known as Raspao. I know I know…it’s just shaved ice. But it’s not! It is flavoured with natural products, topped with malted milk AND sweetened condensed milk AND honey AND fresh coconut…all for a mere $2. I had the pleasure of indulging in this magical street sweet at the best Raspao vendor in Casco Viejo…using fresh and natural ingredients to flavour and top it.
Now for the tour…
One thing is for sure…if you know anything about Panama, you know about the Canal…but Panama is best understood if you have some basic history about the country, the people and how it came to be such an amazing place to live and visit.
The area of focus for this tour is Casco Viejo (Casco Antiguo), Panama’s old city and UNESCO heritage site. This spot was important during Spanish colonial period and it was connection between western part of South of America and Spain.
Goran’s tour isn’t just about basic history, he shares his personal stories and the stories of the locals who have shared their stories. It really is a super unique take on a typical walking tour. As Goran explains, he shares stories that you would otherwise never know.
As he shares history, we stroll around Casco Viejo, exploring the streets and the architecture. You will walk away from the tour feeling a little more enlightened about this incredible area of Panama City. He shared some Panamanian customs and habits, local culture and what life is like here, as well as tales of the locals.
To top off the already very engaging and informative tour, Goran also shares with you some of his favourite spots to eat at, drink at and visit…many of these restaurants are not the same old typical ones that you see on all the blog posts…these ones are hand chosen by Goran and his wife. AND…for good reason. I stopped in at one of his suggestions for lunch after the tour and it was 100% among the top restaurants I have ever eaten at. More on that to come…

This was a great tour to start off my two months in Panama. Not only did I get a tour and history of the neighbourhood I am staying in, but also some overall history of the country and of the canal. But more importantly, Goran really shared about his experiences in Panama which was really really nice because it enables you to relate on a different level than just being fed information.
I recommend that you take this tour for sure…Goran was super personable, extremely informative and he clearly cares about the experiences of his tour guests….he shows that by going above and beyond offering to help and offer guidance well past the tour is complete.
Goran is a Top Notch Guy!!!! I plan on taking another tour of his before I leave the capital as well.
Funnily enough…he is originally from the country I am heading to next.
