Nine consortiums from China, Italy, South Korea, Spain, Brazil and Portugal want to be prequalified to design and build Line 3, which has $2.6 billion in financing.

Line 3 of the Panama Metro as it has been conceived, will have a length in its first phase of about 26.75 kilometers with 14 passenger stations. The line layout begins with a connection with Line 1 of the Metro at the Albrook passenger station departing towards the Balboa area and then crossing the Panama Canal on the superstructure of the 4th Bridge over the Canal, extending along the easement of the Pan-American Highway with an important interchange to offer connectivity with the Panama Pacifico Special Economic Area and continuing towards the center of the City of Arraiján.  

From Arraiján it continues its route by the Pan-American route with several passenger stations until ending at Ciudad del Futuro where the facilities of lines yard and workshops will be located. The project for Line 3 in its first phase will be designed and constructed in a way that facilitates the extension of the line to eventually reach La Chorrera in a second phase.

The first phase of Line 3 of the Panama Metro has been dimensioned to meet a demand, at peak hours in peak direction, of about 20 thousand passengers in 2020, which represents a relatively high demand. With the extension of the line planned for La Chorrera, this projection of peak demand will increase to 24,519 passengers in peak direction, and 31,862 passengers using the system in 2050.  

It is estimated that the project will start execution in 2017 with substantial acceptance and will be put into operation by the end of 2021.
