The Technological University of Panama (UTP), in collaboration with the Center for Multidisciplinary Studies in Science, Engineering and Technology (CEMCIT AIP), has carried out the Conversation “Mapping the Wetlands of Matusagaratí” located in the border province of Darién recognizing the variety of wetlands in the region.
This event marks a milestone within the framework of the research project “Hydrology, Carbon Reserves, Plant and Fish of Matusagaratí”, led by Dr. Indra Candanedo, teacher and researcher of the Regional Center of Panama West of the UTP. Funded by the National Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation (SENACYT) and managed by the CEMCIT AIP, this project has revealed surprising discoveries about the wetlands of Matusagaratí.
Matusagaratí, a set of wetlands located in the heart of the province of Darién, houses a unique diversity of aquatic ecosystems, including freshwater herblands, cativales, oreyzales, mixed forests and mangroves.
“Until recently, the exact limits and the variety of wetlands in Matusagaratí were unknown. However, after five years of arduous research and unprecedented collaboration between national and international scientists, we have managed to accurately map the boundaries of wetlands and identify ten different types, some of which are new to Panama. This was possible thanks to the use of satellite images, drones and field confirmations. We estimate that the total area of these wetlands is 56,000 hectares,” emphasized Dr. Candanedo, a researcher associated with CEMCIT AIP.
This discovery not only expands knowledge about the biodiversity of Panamanian wetlands, but also underlines the importance of the conservation and sustainable management of these vital ecosystems for environmental balance and human well-being.
