Susie’s Birthday Month

News from Panama / Monday, June 11th, 2018

End of the line for our South America vacation for Susie’s Birthday Month – Bariloche Patagonia!! No it is not Switzerland but Bariloche known as Argentina’s answer to Switzerland.

St Bernard’s with whisky flasks and yes, they specialize in chocolate too!

Situated on a series of lakes and flanked by the mountains of Patagonia, Bariloche is a ski resort and it is winter time now so we will see snow!!  This is a special part of our trip and we are doing it right.

Lirolay Suites looks like a medieval castle and is right on the lake.  I reserved Suite Lirolay which comes with extended living area, Jacuzzi, fireplace and killer views of the lake.

As the Peso is down over 35%, we have this suite for under $200 per night in the height of ski season.

This is where the ski addicts come after winter in Aspen as you can ski now through August and more.

So, while we don’t ski we will certainly enjoy this venue.

Our trip begins in Panama City next week where we fly to Santiago, Chile.

We will spend Susie’s official birthday in Santiago with the first day visiting the neighboring port of Valpariaso.

No trip to Santiago is complete without visiting Mercado Central where there is one of the largest seafood markets in the world, thanks to the marine life off of the coast here.

I see that they will have stone crabs, oysters, scallops, king crab, clams, mussels and about every kind of fish you can imagine!

We will visit about 12 places while we are in the City before we depart to Buenos Aires and switch from fish to meat.

Oh, and did I mention some of the best wines in the world!!

Susie will be trying her hand at the Tango when we visit the Teatro Piazolla.

We take a short side trip to Uruguay to visit Colonia del SacramientoThe town dates back to the 1600s and has a lot of the original cobblestone streets.

So, expect to see a lot of pictures when we return.  I will tell you that I found TripAdvisor to be of a lot of help in not only selecting the top places to go and see but also in organizing our bookings and linking the local tours with their world wide platform.

See you back in the saddle when we return in July.
