Sugar Business Growing in Central America

In the first nine months of 2017, countries in the region exported $1.166 billion worth of sugar, 41% more than was sold during the same period in 2016.

Exports by country 
In the first three quarters of 2017, the main exporter of raw sugar in Central America was Guatemala, with $706 million, followed by El Salvador, with $184 million, Nicaragua, with $109 million, Costa Rica with $103 million, Honduras, with $42 million and Panama with $22 million.

Variation of regional exports 
Between the first nine months of 2016 and 2017, the value exported from the region grew by 41%, increasing from $827 million to $1.166 billion.

The increase recorded in the first three quarters of 2017 represents a recovery in sales abroad, as for the periods in question in 2014 and 2016, negative variations were recorded.
