Regional Office of the International Telecommunication Union moves to Panama

Panama will be the new headquarters of the Central American Regional Office of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), after being approved by consensus of the Member States its transfer from Tegucigalpa, Honduras where it is currently located.

A source from the Panamanian Foreign Ministry announced that the permanent representative of Panama to the United Nations (UN) in Geneva, Juan Alberto Castillero, participated in the “Meeting of the Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU),” held on July 12, 2023, in the city of Geneva, Switzerland

In the session, issues were raised regarding the facilities offered by Panama for the Installation of this regional office, and the gratitude to the authorities on behalf of the ITU Directorate, for the cooperation and collaboration provided to make this project a reality; mentioning the future growth and expansion of the office and improvement in relations with the countries of the region.

During the Council Meeting, they intervened and approved the transfer of the regional office, Canada, the United States, Brazil, Mexico, Cuba, Paraguay, Honduras, and Central American countries, with the immediate approval of the ITU General Secretariat.

In relation to the issue, an alternate meeting was held in the Office of the Secretary General of the ITU, Doreen Martin, with the presence of the regional director of the Americas of the ITU, Bruno Ramos, and the National Director of Telecommunications, Hildeman Rangel, representing the director of the National Public Services Authority (ASEP), Armando Fuentes.
