Public Prosecutor’s Office investigates illegal logging of Cocobolo wood in Sovereignty Park

The Public Ministry – through the Superior Prosecutor’s Office of the Environment, initiated an investigation into the crime against natural resources and against wildlife, after the discovery of two tons of Cocobolo wood, in the Sovereignty National Park.

In coordination with the National Police and the Ministry of the Environment, the MP carried out an inspection procedure in the park and, after the discovery on July 30, of 15 wooden tucas of the species Cocobolo on the forest road, the investigations began.

Monday, 1 of August, the Environment Prosecutor’s Office found the location of 21 trees that were cut down at seven different points within the protected area of the park.

It is presumed that this wood is intended for illegal trafficking and export to the international market.
