The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has delivered more than 23,000 property titles to families living in the Canal watershed. This initiative is part of the Land Titling Program, aimed at providing legal security to communities while promoting sustainable development in the region.
For the past 20 years, the Participatory Platform of the Canal Watershed has worked collaboratively with communities, institutions, and strategic partners to protect water resources and improve residents’ quality of life. This platform has established the Canal watershed as a unique model in the region for governance and community engagement.
Luis Rovira, Vice President for Water Resource Administration at the ACP, highlighted that over $125 million has been invested in various programs. The watershed covers 7.3% of the national territory and is home to more than 377,000 people across 944 communities. Additionally, over 2.5 million residents depend on the watershed lakes for potable water.
Ilya Espino de Marotta, Deputy Administrator of the Canal, emphasized the progress achieved through environmental and social programs such as reforestation, payments for environmental services, sustainable family farming, environmental education, and water supply and sanitation management. These initiatives have delivered tangible improvements in the quality of life of the local population.
The ACP also aims to extend the lessons learned from the traditional watershed to the western watershed, covering the Indio River, to continue sustainable development and water resource protection across the region.
