Prestigious Support for Nicaraguan Canal

News from Panama / Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

Here are two articles that add to the recent news releases about the real possibility of another canal project, this one in Nicaragua.

The presence of globally relevant companies in the project has resulted in the reasonable and heavy skepticism about its realization being played down in the face of new evidence.

Cruz Sequeira says that his position of a “militant skeptic” on the subject, has changed to being that of a “skeptic with an open-mind to the evidence,” noting specifically “the prestige and history of several world-class consulting firms, which are involved in the feasibility studies of the Interoceanic Canal project for Nicaragua. ”

Regarding the evident presence of expert lobbyists from Washington among the companies contracted by the concessionaire Hong Kong Nicaragua Canal Develpment Investment Co. (HKCD), the former ambassador highlights that “the canal obviously has great symbolism, historically speaking this used to be the immediate sphere of influence of the United States, and therefore, whether the (chinese) company is private or not, it still has the characteristic that it belongs to a citizen of mainland China (Wang Jing), who probably has indirect links with the formal power structure. Therefore this sensitivity has to be managed well as it has not stopped being a relevant issue for the United States that a project of this magnitude, is in its immediate sphere of influence. “
