President of Panama denies privatizations in health and water

News from Panama / Monday, December 30th, 2019

President of Panama Laurentino Cortizo denied today the privatization of the Institute of National Aqueducts and Sewers (IDAAN) and the Social Security Fund (CSS).

In statements to the press, Cortizo assured that his administration is working on the transformation and rescue of both public institutions so that they provide an efficient and sustainable service to the population.

The government is currently implementing a plan in IDAAN that includes investments in existing systems to improve service, repair leaks – which account for 40 percent of water losses – and provide timely attention to citizens’ damage reports, he noted. The transformation of the entity also includes the training and updating of human resources and the incorporation of qualified Panamanian professionals and technicians to guarantee the proper operation of the systems, he added.

To this are added investments in water treatment plants, underground water systems (wells), storage tanks, pumping stations, and drinking water networks to reinforce the production, storage and distribution of the precious liquid.

Regarding the CSS, the president reiterated his commitment to convene a national dialogue with the participation of all sectors: business leaders, workers, unions and civil society, with a view to rescuing this state health institution and offering greater financial sustainability.
