Panamanian pitahaya producers will begin exporting this exotic fruit to Europe in 2023, the Panamanian ambassador to Spain, Allen Sellers, confirmed to EFE, who this Thursday visited the exhibition space of this product at the fruit and vegetable fair Fruit Attraction in Madrid.
The pitahaya, also known as dragon fruit, “will be sold in Spain next year,” where “it is sure that of the Panamanian Association of Pitahaya Producers, Virgilio Milord, explained that in the last 2021/22 campaign national production reached 30 tons, a figure that “will increase by 40% in 2022/23 and that will increase exponentially in the next ten years.”
According to him, the 30 hectares dedicated to its cultivation can increase in the coming years and, above all, the yields per hectare, which now with young plants are one ton but that in their ripe period reach 20 tons / hectare. Milord commented that it has been a “success for producers”.
The Attraction of Investments and the Promotion of Exporters (Propanamá), Carmen Gisela Vergara, added that this fair, which was inaugurated on the 4th and closes its doors this Thursday, has represented “an excellent opportunity for our exporting companies to publicize its offer to buyers from all over the world and especially from the European market.”
The Panamanian delegation at Fruit Attraction for the promotion of pitahaya has been formed by 15 companies from the Central American country with an export vocation.
