The Panama Metro has postponed the submission date for proposals on the Panama–San Miguelito cable car project, a major urban mobility initiative connecting densely populated areas. Originally scheduled for November 17, 2025, the new deadline for proposals is January 15, 2026.
This change applies to both the proposal submissions and the opening ceremony, which will take place at 11:01 a.m. at the Metro Panama administrative building in Altos de Curundú. Only prequalified bidders, meeting previous process requirements, are eligible to participate.
Two consortia have expressed formal interest. The Teleférico SPE Consortium, comprising Sofretesa (Panama), Ingeniería Estrella (Dominican Republic), and Prodemex (Mexico), brings over 35 years of experience in urban mobility projects, including five cable car systems. The San Miguelito Cable Car Consortium, including Cointer (Spain) and Doppelmayr (Austria), is a global leader, having built over 95,000 cable car systems worldwide.
The project encompasses a comprehensive administrative concession, including financing, design, civil works, manufacturing, installation, operation, maintenance, and eventual system transfer. It is a cornerstone of the National Government’s urban mobility plan, aimed at improving connectivity between Panama and San Miguelito, two of the most congested metropolitan areas.
The cable car will feature six stations strategically located throughout the San Miguelito district, offering a modern alternative to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance public transportation options in Panama City.
