The Panama Municipality has launched an ambitious river and beach cleanup project, allocating $4.9 million for the conservation of the Matías Hernández and Río Abajo rivers and the Panama Bay coastline, stretching from Calzada de Amador to Costa del Este. This initiative aims to improve public health, reduce flooding risks, and protect coastal biodiversity.
Project Objectives
The main goals of the initiative include:
- Cleaning rivers and beaches: Removing waste and debris from affected areas.
- Using specialized equipment: Deploying machinery for areas with difficult access.
- Environmental education: Conducting awareness campaigns in local communities.
- Ongoing maintenance: Establishing a continuous cleaning schedule beyond periodic operations.
Areas of Intervention
The specific areas for cleanup include:
- Matías Hernández River: From Avenida Domingo Díaz to the bay.
- Río Abajo: From Corredor Norte to the bay.
- Panama Bay Coastline: From Calzada de Amador to Costa del Este.
These locations were chosen due to high levels of pollution and challenging access, requiring specialized intervention to ensure sustainable results.
Collaboration with Organizations and Citizens
The Municipality emphasizes that this project complements the work of various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) rather than replacing it. Active participation from NGOs, businesses, communities, and citizens is encouraged to maximize the impact on conserving Panama’s waterways and coastal areas.
Official Statement
Yarelys Gómez, Deputy Director of Environmental Management at the Municipality, said:
“Protecting the environment means protecting everyone. This project is an investment in the health, well-being, and future of our city and calls on citizens to help keep our rivers and beaches clean.”
