Panama: Plan to Extend Coastal Strip

News from Panama / Monday, August 28th, 2017

The mayoral office of the capital has announced that the World Bank will be financing a feasibility study to expand the coastal strip to the east of the city.

The goal of Mayor Jose Isabel Blandon is to complete the feasibility analysis process and leave the technical reports to the next administration, in order to proceed with the project.

“… The proposal to extend the coastal strip to a little beyond the jurisdiction of Juan Diaz is contemplated in the Action Plan for Panama Metropolitana, prepared by the Municipality of Panama in conjunction with the IDB.”

The plan speaks of three phases of the project. The first one will include the Punta Paitilla-Punta Pacifica section), which… ‘proposes opening streets and paths that give access to public spaces on the coast for the enjoyment of inhabitants and tourists,” said Blandón.”

“… On stage 2 (Boca La Caja – Panama VIejo), the same as with with section 1, it proposes the continuation of connections and opening of spaces that give public access to the sea. Meanwhile, the document details that the last stretch goes from Costa del Este to the mouth of the river Juan Diaz, to ‘protect and recover the wetlands around the river’s disembarkation, with control measures for the wastewater treatment plant’.”
