News from Panama / Saturday, March 22nd, 2025

Panama’s National Ministry of Energy has called for a public tender for the contracting of long-term renewable energy, in order to guarantee more stable and competitive prices for electricity service.

The tender, which will be managed by the Empresa de Transmisión Eléctrica, S.A. (ETESA), will require the presentation of the corresponding specifications before October 31, 2025. Contracts may be extended up to 180 months, with a maximum price of US$97.50 per MWh.

This initiative seeks to diversify the energy matrix, prioritizing the participation of new hydroelectric and wind power plants. The National Secretary of Energy, Juan Manuel Urriola, explained that this process is part of a long-term planning strategy to avoid dependence on the market and ensure a reliable supply.

In the coming months, a five-year Contracting Plan will be presented that will structure the growth of the energy sector under sustainable and predictable principles. In December 2024, ETESA carried out an international tender for short-term energy, which resulted in contracts at competitive prices and with greater diversification of the energy matrix.
