The Institute of Scientific Research and High Technology Services of Panama (Indicasat AIP) inaugurated its new Genomics Laboratory, the result of a cooperation agreement with the National Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation (Senacyt). This laboratory, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, will strengthen the country’s ability to carry out scientific projects based on DNA analysis.

It was explained that among the capabilities of the Genomics Laboratory are the complete sequencing of complex genomes, the identification of genetic variants relevant to diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular, as well as the characterization of microbial communities in environmental samples. Dr. Eduardo Ortega Barría, national secretary of Senacyt, stressed that this laboratory will not only benefit the research of the Indicasat AIP, but will also be available to the Panamanian scientific community in general.

Dr. Luis Mejía, researcher at Indicasat AIP and coordinator of the laboratory, highlighted that these DNA sequencers will be the first of their kind in the country, opening up new opportunities for scientific and technological research. During the presentation, details of ongoing projects that take advantage of the services of the Genomics Laboratory were shared, including research on neurodegenerative diseases, tuberculosis, leishmaniasis and the potential of fungi associated with coffee and cocoa crops.

The Indicasat AIP, created in 2002 by Senacyt, aims to be a platform for the scientific and technological advancement of Panama, contributing to the training of human resources of excellence in applied research and development. Senacyt, on the other hand, focuses on turning science and technology into tools for the sustainable development of the country, promoting projects that promote scientific and technological development and improve the quality of life of Panamanians.
