Two Panamanian companies dedicated to herring and anchovy fishing, better known as “small pelagics” achieved the certification granted by the IFFO RS Marin Trust organization.
The Aquatic Resources Authority of Panama (Arap), reported that on this occasion the companies Promarina, S. A. and Processor Bayano, S. A.
According to the entity, both companies have made a major change in their business model, as well as having now turned to sustainability, and that today make them models to follow, obtaining the international seal of fishing and responsible production.
For the company Promarina, S.A. “this recognition is the result of more than thirteen years of hard work in the fishing sector.
They also emphasize that “this change is indicative that good practices in the industry are guaranteed in Panama, consolidating investments that focus their strengths on consistent improvements in the short and medium term, aligned with the interests of conscious consumers and committed to the nature of the whole world.”
They also maintain that they as a company are also aligned with the National Strategic Plan in the 2030 agenda, to achieve the FAO-UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
With this certification we align ourselves specifically in SDGs 12 and 14, responsible production and consumption, obtaining an efficient management of natural resources and the protection of the marine and coastal ecosystem, ending unsustainable practices, maintaining the frontal fight against unreported and unregulated illegal fishing.
For her part, the General Administrator of Arap, Flor Torrijos, pointed out that it is a pride for Panama to receive the first global certification from IFFO RS Marin Trust and this achievement is in line with the regulations that promote the protection of marine species in balance with sustainable fishing activity, generating wealth and employment and a safe source of food.
