Panama achieved 100% renewable energy generation and exports surplus to countries in the region

Panama achieved a 100% renewable electricity generation to cover its demand of 1,437 MW, generating a surplus of 226.47 MW that were sent to other countries in the region to cover its deficit, the Ministry of Energy reported.

A report from the institution indicates that this progress reaffirms Panama’s role as a key energy provider in Central America and its commitment to sustainability.

Current energy generation is made up of 83.35% hydroelectric plants (1,361.13 MW), 11.43% solar energy (186.62 MW) and 5.22% wind energy (85.29 MW). This combination, based on the natural resources available in the country, allows to maintain a stable electrical system with the ability to respond to variations in demand.

Juan Manuel Urriola, Secretary of Energy, said that Panama shows how, with adequate energy planning in the short term, it is possible to meet its energy demand in a clean way and at a lower cost, taking advantage of renewable sources and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. “Panama is able to contribute to the energy security of the region without compromising its own supply, being an example of efficiency in the use of our renewable resources,” said Urriola.

In addition to meeting local demand, Panama has a rolling reserve of 186.33 MW, which reinforces the reliability of the system and ensures a quick response in case of fluctuations in energy consumption. This reserve allows Panama to maintain a stable supply and at the same time offer support to other electrical systems in Central America, consolidating its position as a pillar in regional energy integration, indicates the report of the energy secter.
