Construction on the new cruise ship terminal on Amador Causeway is moving forward at a brisk pace.
President Juan Carlos Varela toured the construction site this week and announced the project is 44 percent complete, which is good news for the development of Amador. The cruise ship terminal will change the dynamic of the causeway, spurring new restaurants and shopping, as well as introducing millions of tourists to the beauty of the Causeway.
The terminal is being built by a consortium formed by the China Harbor Engineering Company and the Belgian company Jan de Nul. The schedule was set back a month by a labor strike earlier this year, but it should still on track to finish by mid-2019, Varela said during his tour.
The government is spending $165 million on the 10,800-square-meter facility, which started construction in Oct. 2017 after a public bidding process.
Varela stressed that the cruise port will boost tourism for the city and the “arrival of each ship with passengers will generate millions in profits,” according to coverage in Telemetro. The Chinese ambassador to Panama, Wei Qiang, accompanied the President on the tour, Telemetro reported.
