In a breakthrough for digital connectivity in Latin America and the Caribbean, the companies Liberty Networks and Gold Data will develop the new underwater cable system “MANTA”, which will offer high-capacity and low latency routes between Panama, Mexico, Colombia and the United States, since this agreement combines the GD-1 and LN-1 submarine systems, and marks a milestone in the telecommunications infrastructure of the region.

The parties agreed to change the name of the system to MANTA with the new partnership, Sparkle will join Liberty Networks and Gold Data in the northern part of MANTA, connecting the United States with Mexico and will join Liberty Networks in the southern part, accessing Panama and Colombia.

The new system will be the first international submarine cable in the Gulf of Mexico and will connect Mexico and the United States with Central America and Latin America, will have an estimated length of 5,600 kilometers (km) and is designed to support a minimum of 20Tb per pair of fibers.

This system will also improve the flow of traffic in the region by providing new low-latency routes to interconnect the main data centers of Panama City, Mexico City, Querétaro and Bogotá with the United States.

Liberty Latin America’s senior vice president of infrastructure and corporate strategy, Ray Collins, indicated that MANTA represents his commitment to facilitating perfect connectivity throughout the Caribbean and Latin America region with a reliable and resilient solution focused on the future of data traffic.

“We are excited that Sparkle is joining Gold Data and us to deliver this critical infrastructure that will completely revolutionize connectivity across the region for decades to come,” Collins said.

The new submarine cable system, MANTA, is expected to be operating in 2027, companies plan to announce their technology provider soon.
