U.S. Navy Adm. Alvin Holsey, Commander of U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), will visit Panama from February 19 to 20 to meet with the nation’s leaders to strengthen cooperation and discuss critical regional challenges.
This marks the first time Adm. Holsey visits Panama since assuming command of U.S Southern Command in November 2024. Panama is one of the United States’ most important strategic allies and remains one of its strongest partners in the region. The United States’ longstanding partnership with Panama is built on an enduring commitment to democratic principles.
During his visit, Adm. Holsey will meet with key leaders including Panama’s Minister of Security Frank Ábrego and Minister of Foreign Affairs Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez to discuss the U.S.-Panama security partnership and address additional security topics such as safeguarding the Canal area from Chinese Communist Party influence and control, as well as collaborative efforts to end the illegal migration crisis in the region. In addition, Adm. Holsey will meet with Panama Canal Administrator, Dr. Ricaurte Vásquez Morales to discuss the strategic importance of the Canal and areas of mutual cooperation.
