Naturgy has decided not to enter the solar panel installation market and, instead, will concentrate its efforts on improving the electricity service in Panama. This decision was communicated to the Panamanian Chamber of Solar Energy, which is active in the promotion of solar energy in the country.
To date, Panama has 4,400 photovoltaic installations, of which 2,863 are connected to the grid through Naturgy. The company is implementing a smart meter pilot project in West Panama, with the aim of optimizing energy consumption and improving the quality of electrical service.
Juan Andrés Navarro, president of the Panamanian Chamber of Solar Energy, emphasized that it is essential that distributors act as facilitators and avoid competing with the solar sector, since fair competition is crucial for the growth of photovoltaics in Panama.
Since April, the Consumer Protection and Competition Defense Authority (Acodeco) has been investigating Naturgy for possible monopolistic practices that could hinder competition in the installation of solar panels. The Panamanian Solar Energy Chamber is committed to collaborating with the authorities to ensure a competitive environment that favors the sustainable development of the sector.
