President José Raúl Mulino held a meeting in New York with officials from CMA CGM S.A., the third largest shipping line in the world. During this meeting, the large carrier interest in new Panama ports was confirmed, particularly in the planned Panamanian ports at Corozal and Telfer. Mulino emphasized that this aligns closely with Panama’s maritime strategy to enhance its status as a global logistics hub.
What CMA CGM is Considering for Operations
Rodolphe Saadé, the president of CMA CGM, explained that the company has been closely following opportunities in Panama given its strategic geographic location and existing logistic strengths. The carrier is evaluating having a port operation in Panama, possibly in one of the new Panama ports. The planned Panamanian ports at Corozal and Telfer are of particular interest because of their potential to increase shipping throughput and support the expansion of maritime trade.
Panama’s Maritime Strategy and Logistical Expansion
Mulino noted that Panama is moving forward with a maritime strategy directed at increasing its logistic capacities. Part of this includes cleaning up existing port concessions and starting new port projects. The interest from CMA CGM is seen as a validation of this strategy. With this large carrier interest, Panama hopes to enhance its standing in global shipping and attract more investment into its port infrastructure.
Key Players and Implications for Canal-Region Logistics Boost
The meeting included Panama’s Ministers of Economy (Felipe Chapman) and of the Canal (Ramón Icaza). Their participation underscores the national importance of the development of the new ports. If CMA CGM decides to establish operations in Corozal or Telfer, Panama would see a logistic capacity expansion, reinforcing its maritime policy goals and boosting the infrastructure of the canal region.
