The crisis in Venezuela, the situation of the illegal immigration of the Darién and the role of Panama as a strategic ally in the region, were the issues addressed in a telephone dialogue by the President of Panama, José Raúl Mulino and the President of the United States Joe Biden.
Biden defined President Mulino as a “top partner” of the United States, and stressed that the figure of the Panamanian president “strells” in the region.
Mulino and the president of the United States held a telephone dialogue on Wednesday afternoon for about 11 minutes, in which they also pledged to explore a joint solution to the crisis that Venezuela is experiencing.
On the issue, Biden recognized the leadership of Panama and its president in the search for a solution to the crisis in Venezuela, while thanking President Mulino for the role of Panama in the framework of the dialogue in the Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations.
“Panama has a very large historical debt to Venezuela,” Mulino reminded his American peer, referring to the active role of Panama in the search for a solution to the institutional crisis of the South American country.
Likewise, President Biden promised to start during the month of August the implementation of the agreement by which the repatriation flights of migrants arriving in Panama through the Darien jungle will be initiated, whose financing – according to the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries – will be borne by the United States.
Biden said that the United States “is ready” to implement the agreement, which, Mulino reiterated, will be carried out respecting human rights and the dignity of people.
Mulino and Biden will maintain, as agreed, a direct communication between the White House and the Palacio de las Herzas.
